Its ideal purpose is to pull organic matter build up as well as oils found on the surface of the water to maintain a clean and healthy aquarium environment. It allows you to alter the water flow so you may choose if the water pulls from the surface, under the surface or both. The small holes prevent small aquarium fish and inhabitants from getting sucked up while also maintaining a perfectly smooth water flow.
